(Rome 1571-1621) a son of the brother of the pope Clement VIII and his state secretary; he conducted the negotiations and abilitation of Henry IV and negotiated joining of the city of Ferrara to the Pontifical State; elected cardinal in 1593 and nominated archbishop of Ravenna in 1604. The famous poet Tasso dedicated to him "Discorsi del poema eroico".
