Casa dei Cavalieri di Rodi (House of the Knights of Rhodes) is an ancient seat of the Roman priorate of the Order of the Knights of Malta/ Rhodes (ancient name: Cavalieri di Rodi). The house was built over a Roman construction at the end of the 12th century, and restored by prior of the Order, cardinal Marco Barbo in 1467-70. It has a well-preserved colonnaded atrium, dating from the time of Augustus. For a certain period of time the house was given in rent to a wood vendor, and under St Pius V it was assigned to the nuns of Dominican order, remained here until 1930, when the convent was destroyed for excavations of Forum of Augustus.

There is a delightful walkway leading towards the brick tower behind Tajan's market (13th century defensive castle) which passes beneath the 12th century loggia of the Casa dei Cavalieri di Rodi (also called knights of St. John of Jerusalem). Its entrance has lovely Grillo Square is quite hidden and not too well known.

In 1930-1946 the house belonged to the Commune of Rome and was restored, but in 1946 it returned back to the Knights. Today the Casa houses the antiquarium of the Foro di Augusto. The knights established here at the end of the 12th century and built their seat upon ancient Roman ruins. The façade that looks onto the square has a Romanesque toothed moulding and a 15th century Cross window. The central part, covered by a renaissance vault, has been converted in 1946 into the “Cappella di San Giovanni Battista”. From one of the doors, at the bottom of the stairs, is the entrance to the Augustan portico with arcades and traverse pillars, wonderfully preserved.
