"Casa del Burcardo/ Raccolta teatrale del Burcardo (Burckhardt Theatrical Museum)" submitted by RomeTour Editorial Team and last updated on Friday 6th May 2011
This house was built in 1503 in German style with Gothic elements and a tower, by a papal ceremony-maker, bishop and author of famous epoch reviews, Hans Burckhardt (in Italian - Giovanni Burcardo). It took the name of Torre Argentina from the Latin name of bishop's native town, Strasbourg (Argentoratum). This name of the house became the name of the zone.
The House at present is occupied by Library and Theatrical Museum of Burckhardt of the Societa Italian Autori ed Editori (S.I.A.E) (Italian Society of Authors and Editors). It preserves more than 30,000 volumes, a collection of engravings, more than 100 masks of Greek and Roman theatre, ancient terracotta statuettes, costumes of celebrated actors, and notable collection of 18th-19th century puppets.
There is a considerable number of drawings and prints (over three thousand pieces), stenographic sketches, portraits on oils or tempera (about 120) of nineteenth and twentieth century theatrical actors and authors. The collection was acquired through sales or donations by S.I.A.E., the Italian Society of Authors and Editors and since 1926 it is located in the fifteenth century Burcardo Palace, residence of Johannes Burckhardt, the papal master of ceremonies of that time.
