"Chiesa (Church) di Santa Maria dei Miracoli, Rome" submitted by RomeTour Editorial Team and last updated on Thursday 28th April 2011
The church was erected in 1664-1679 by C.Rainaldi to preserve a miraculous image of Madonna, which was found on the wall close to Porta del Popolo and placed in a little oratory close to Tiber in 1325. The church has a central plan and two chapels on each side. The image of Madonna is on the high altar surmounted by four marble angels by A.Raggi. In presbytery are the funeral monument to cardinal Gastaldi, who sponsored construction of the church, and his brother. The facade was later changed by G.L.Bernini and C.Fontana.
