Chiesa di San Giuliano dei Fiamminghi (National Church of Belgium)

It is the 8th century church built for the Flemish colony. Historically, the church has been the National Church in Rome of the Southern Netherlands and, in 1830, became the national church of the Kingdom of Belgium. Its birth coincides with the conversion into Christian religion of the Flemish. It is just near the Chiesa del Santissimo Sudario (SS.) Sudario/ National Church of Savoyards or Piedmont.

During the 11th century the Christian Flemish community built a hospice for all the pilgrims and visitors who came to see the eternal city, as well as a chapel dedicated to S. Giuliano. In 1670 a church was built, and during 18th century it was enlarged. In 1870 the church and the hospice became a protectorate of the Belgian state. The hospice was later transformed into a Belgian college (now in Via Aurelia). The small facade, inserted during the construction of the hospice, has a small portal with a lion, symbol of Flanders. In a niche located in the upper part, is the statue of S. Giuliano. The interior has a plan, the vaulted ceiling is decorated at its centre by a 18th century fresco depicting the glory of the saint.

On the entrance of the baroque facade is a little statue of St Julian. A hospice for the Flemish pilgrims is annexed to the church. The shields of the Four Members (Bruges and the Franc of Bruges, Ghent and Ypres) also surround the medallion and adorn the facade of the church under the heading: ECCLESIA S. GIULIANI HOSPITALIS FLANDRIAE. Above the entrance of the church, a Latin inscription summarizes the history of the building until 1785.
