Chiesa di Santa Maria in Campitelli (Church of Santa Maria in Campitelli)

The primitive church with this name was located on the site of present Palazzo Lovatelli, but was abandoned in 1619 to build a new one on the house of Blessed Ludovica Albertoni in 1662-1667 by C.Rainaldi. The order was by Alexander VII, who wished to create an appropriate temple in honour of a miraculous image of the Madonna, which was believed to have halted an outbreak of pestilence.

Interior is on a Greek-cross plan with the perspective effect using numerous arches, columns, and a heavy cornice. In the second chapel on the right is a painting by L.Giordano and the mentioned above image of Madonna dating from the 11th century. In the first chapel on the left are two tombs of the Altieri family. In the left transept is a painting by Baciccia. Here is the tomb of cardinal Bartolomeo Pacca (author of a decree about the limitation of export of works of art) and a tomb of cardinal Giuseppe Bofondi (president of Council of Ministers under Pius IX).

Due to the diversity of the decorations, the unusual distribution of doors and windows, she offers extraordinary chiaroscuro-effects, scenical and plastic, even though it lacks sculptural ornament. Inside the church, a very rich golden tabernacle by Giovanni Antonio de Rossi welcomes the image of the Vergine. In the nearby cloister one can see part of the basement of the Tempio di Apollo Sosiano. Chiesa di Santa Maria in Campitelli (Church of Santa Maria in Campitelli) is located on Piazza Campitelli just north of the Teatro di Marcello.
