Chiesa/Church Santa Maria (Parrocchia S.M.) in Traspontina, Rome

The church stands on the place where before 1527 was residence of Borgo's Governor. Begun in 1566 by Giovanni Peruzzi (the son of famous B.Peruzzi) the construction of church was continued by O.Mascherino in 1581-1587 and finished by Francesco Peparelli in 1637, who also had built a bell-tower.

Interior. One nave with five chapels on each side (famous is Cappella di S.Barbara), Latin-cross plan; decorations are by Pomarancio, G.B.Ricci and A.Gherardi.

The interior, embodying a Latin cross, has a single nave, five chapels per side and a magnificent dome (by Mascherino), without a tambour (as the bombardiers of Castel Sant’Angelo asked so that it would not impede the shooting of the mortars placed on the castle’s bastions).
