Church/ Basilica of San Clemente (Saint Clement) in Laterano

The original Church/ Basilica of Saint Clement in Laterano (Chiesa/ Basilica di San Clemente al Laterano) built in 385 was discovered in the end of the 19th century by a priest Mulloly from an Irish religious organization to which the present church is assigned. It was on basilican plan and was much larger and had a narthex in front of it. The primitive church was erected over the palace of the 1st century A.D. and was dedicated to St Clement I, the 4th pope. Behind it was a Temple of Mythras (2nd-3rd century A.D.), which, after its cult was suppressed, was adapted for the apse of the church.

In 1084 Chiesa di S.Clemente was devastated by Normans of Robert Guiscard, and in 1108 pope Pascal II ordered its reconstruction. San Clemente in Laterano is one of the most interesting and antique basilicas in Rome. In 1108 Pope Paschal II built the upper church on its ruins, and it was restored by Carlo Fontana under the papacy of Clemens XI.

The architect built the modest baroque façade using the antique granite columns for the arched portico. The interior was remodelled by Fontana, and yet still preserves the typical aspect of an antique Roman basilica: it is divided, in fact, into three naves with two marble and granite columns having Ionian capitals. The church is served by the Irish Domenican Fathers.

Exterior of the Church/ Basilica of San Clemente in Laterano has a modest baroque facade, a little portico and a vestibule of the 12th century.
