Church/ Chiesa dei SS.Vincenzo e Anastasio, Rome

Church/ Chiesa dei SS.Vincenzo e Anastasio near the Fontana di Trevi was erected on the site of 14th century church dedicated to S.Anastasio de Trivio in 1650 by order of a famous cardinal titular of the church, French minister, Giulio Mazarini, who's arms are on the facade.

The rich Baroque façade has a double order of Corinthian columns. Ten columns in the lower order and six in the upper one are all separated by the background, and due to their abundance the façade is commonly defined "il canneto". In the frontispice, surmounted by two arched tympani, one finds the coat of arms of Cardinal Mazzarino, who ordered the construction of the church.

The project is by M.Longhi the Younger, who enriched the construction with 18 Corinthian columns. Interior is modest; has a nave and side chapels. The neo-classic decoration was created in 1847. In the first chapel on the right is a tomb of a Russian noble woman who lived for a long time in Rome, Zenaida Wolkonskaia (1792-1862).

The church is famous for being a place of conservation of the hearts and lungs of almost all the popes who had to be embalmed, from Sixtus V to Leo XIII. The biggest part of them died in Palazzo del Quirinale, of which SS.Vincenzo and Anastasio is a parish church.
