"Church/ Chiesa di San Francesco di Paola (Calabrian saint St Francis of Paola)/ National Church for Calabrians" submitted by RomeTour Editorial Team and last updated on Friday 13th May 2011
A rich person originally from Calabria region, devoted to the Calabrian saint St Francis of Paola, acquired in the beginning of the 17th century a large building with a tower with the goal to create here a convent of Minims of S.Francesco di Paola. The church was built in 1632 by Giovan Pietro Morandi and became a "national" church of the Calabrians. Interior has only one nave with three chapels on each side, and a high altar by G.A.De Rossi. There is also a cycle of frescoes dedicated to the saint, by G.Chiari. The vault of sacristy is depicted by Sassoferrato.
Chiesa Rettoria San Francesco Di Paola Ai Monti has a facade in two orders. The lower one is made of travertine, with a portal, two niches and an aedicula, the upper one is simply plastered. The interior has a single nave with three chapels per side and a vaulted ceiling. The high altar is a work by Giovanni Antonio De Rossi. The bell-tower of the church is the only medieval tower used as such. It is a rectangular massive construction conserving till now its coat-of-arms.
The adjoining convent at present is occupied by the Central Institute of Restoration.
Note: The church is now often closed, but you may ask to be admitted at the monastery. The present titular cardinal-deacon of the church, since 21 October 2003, is Renato Martino.
