Church/ Chiesa di San Giuseppe a Capo le Case, Rome

It was built in 1598 by initiative of Spanish priest Soto, who gathered here poor girls. With the help of a Roman noble woman, Fulvia Sforza, he enlarged the property of the church acquiring the gardens and old houses to build here a convent of S.Teresa. In 1628 the church itself was enlarged by initiative of cardinal Marcello Lante. After the monasteries were suppressed, it was nearly abandoned for a long period, and afterwards became a seat of Industrial Museum and of Ente Assistenziale di Roma.

The phrase "capo le case" (beginning of houses) speaks for the situation of this zone, which until the 17th century was a countryside, and the houses here formed the edge of the city. Since 1936 the church is a seat of Arch-confraternity of the Precious Blood.

In 1826 the facade of S. Andrea delle Fratte was completed; in the late XIXth century some of the buildings on the left side of the street were modified; apart from these minor changes the urban design of the area is the same as in 1757, notwithstanding the fact that in the meantime the area of Villa Ludovisi, which stood behind S. Giuseppe a Capo le Case, has become a very busy neighborhood.
