It was built over the ancient private baths, where according to a tradition, a deacon Lorenzo was imprisoned and baptized his guardian. This gave the name of the church "in fonte", i.e. in the water source. The simple church was built in 1543 on expenses of cardinal Juan Alvarez de Toledo and assigned by Urban VIII to the Nobili Aulici. In the 18th century it was enlarged and annexed to the monastery of Benedictines. Since 1918 the church belongs to the Oblates of S.Giuseppe. The 16th century facade was reconstruction in the 30's of the 20th century.
The interior has a single nave with a barrel shaped vault. On the main altar there is a painting by Andrea Camassei(1602-1649), which depicts the saint while he baptizes Ippolito and his family.A small stairwell leads to the underground, where S. Lorenzo's jail was believed to be.:the reservoir,which gave the name to the church, dates back to the C.I or II century A.D.. In the adjoining convent is a bust of Urban VIII by G.L.Bernini.
