"Church/ Chiesa di San Paolo entro le mura (American Episcopal Church)" submitted by RomeTour Editorial Team and last updated on Friday 29th April 2011
Chiesa di San Paolo entro le mura (St. Paul's Within the Walls) is a Protestant church erected by G.E.Street in 1873-1880. It was the first non-Catholic church built in Rome after the fall of Pontifical State. The red-and -white exterior, in travertine and red brick, is in a similar to Romanesque style. The external and internal mosaics are by E.Burne-Jones. In 1977 were opened two new bronze doors to celebrate the meeting between John XXIII and Arch-bishop of Canterbury in 1960.
This episcopal (anglican) American church is the first non-Catholic temple welcomed in Rome and represents a unique testimony in Italy for the English artistic movement "Arts and Crafts", besides being the most interesting carrying out of sacred art in Rome from the late 1800s. It now houses a multi-ethnic, multi-cultural congregation and is the home of the Joel Nafuma Refugee Center. St Paul's is unique in that, other than its work of mission & ministry, it also has to oversee the upkeep of some remarkable pieces of art. The mosaics by Burne-Jones and Breck, the stained glass windows are just the beginning.
