Church /Chiesa di San Salvatore alle Coppelle, Rome

It was built in 1195 by pope Celestine III. In the Middle Ages it was also named Chiesa di S.Salvatore della Pieta', because the name of "Pieta' " was used a lot for the constructions in this zone in that epoch. It derived from an arch, which was located close to Piazza della Rotonda.

In 1739 the church underwent a wide restoration andat the same time the facade was remade on a project by Carlo De Dominicis. The simple façade presents a portal surmountedby a rectangular window. By the sides one finds two portals dominated by twoframed circles. At thebottom end of the interior, made of three naves, one finds an iconostasisdecorated with the portrait of the ”Ultima Cena”.

In 1408 the church was assigned to the Confraternity of the saddlers and furriers. In the 18th and in 19th centuries it was heavily restored. There is a 12th century bell-tower annexed to the church, and two marble inscriptions on the facade. One of them is one of the oldest inscriptions in the Italian language giving note about the name of the church; and the other made in 1750 asks the inn-keepers to report the cases of illness of their foreign clients, who were numerous in role of pilgrims during this Jubilee Year. This is because the Confraternity of Perseverance, which substituted the previous one in possession of the church in 1663, occupied itself with the medical assistance to the foreigners.
