The Church/ Chiesa di Santa Bibiana was built in the 5th century in the so called Horti Liciniani. Its façade has been Bernini’s first architectural work. It is on a basilican plan, and was restored in 1220, then in 1626 reconstructed by G.L.Bernini by the order of Urban VIII. Bernini created a new facade, remade the apse, added two side chapels and renewed the high altar. The latter conserves the precious urn with the rests of the saint, her sister and her mother. The statue of S.Bibiana was also executed by Bernini. The church contains eight ancient columns and a cycle of frescoes along the nave with the series dedicated to the life of S.Bibiana (those on the left are by P.da Cortona, those on the right by Agostino Ciampelli), in the left aisle is a piece of column at which the saint was supposed to have been flogged to death.
