Church/ Chiesa di Santa Chiara, Rome

It was erected in 1563 by F.da Volterra, together with the adjoining hospice for conversion, by wish of St Charles Borromeo and was originally dedicated to St Pius I. In 1628 cardinal Scipione Borghese ordered restoration of the church and change of the name into S.Chiara. At present it belongs to the French Pontifical Seminary, which reconstructed it and adjoining palace in 1880 (architect Luca Carimini), after the collapse of 1855. It is framed by a triangular gable. The interior has a single nave and has no outstanding decorations or works. The altarpiece represents the “Sacra Famiglia” by Virginio Monti.
