Church/ Chiesa di Santa Maria in Aquiro, Rome

Santa Maria in Aquiro was erected on the site of ancient Roman Temple of Matidia, mother of a wife of emperor Hadrian, Giulia Sabina. The first news about this church are of 731-742, when the restoration works were executed by order of Gregory III. The origins of the church's name "in Aquiro" are not known. In 1540 it was entrusted to the Confraternity of the Orphans, instituted by cardinal Gian Domenico De Cupis.

The present church was built between 1588 and 1620 on the basis of a project by Francesco da Volterra firstand then by Carlo Maderno. The façade, built in accordance with a drawingby Maderno, was then completed in 1774 by Pietro Camporese il Vecchio. In 1591 the cardinal Anton Maria Salviati adjoined a college under his name, which later merged with the Confraternity. The same cardinal had the church rebuilt by F.da Volterra, C.Maderno, Filippo Breccioli and P.Camporese. The last reconstruction took place in 1866. The painting decoration is represented by the works of late mannerists; there are also some funeral monuments of 16th-17th centuries. The churchalso holds the oldest painting dedicated to the Vergine di Lourdes, dating backto 1873. In the apse one finds the fourteenth-century-fresco portraying the“Madonna col Bambino e S. Stefano”.
