It is located on Trajan’s Forum in one of themost suggestive corners of the antique part of Rome. In the 1500s, the membersof the Confraternita dei Fornari attained the permission to build a smallchurch for their company. In 1507, a new church was started on the same location based on a project by Antonio da Sangallo il Giovane and completed by Iacopo del Duca (1573-76). Between 1867 and 1873 some restoration works were performed while the sacristy was rebuilt. The lower part is made of bricks and travertine.
Construction of this church was begun in 1501 for the initiative of the Confraternity of the Bakers. It has a rectangular basement, and a facade by Bramante and A.da Sangallo the Y. The dome and a bell-tower are by G.Del Duca. The marble composition of the Virgin and St House of Loreto above the door is probable work by A.Sansovino. Interior is on octagonal plan; and has a chapel decorated by Pomarancio. The statue of St Susan is by F.Duquesnoy, two angels are by S.Maderno, large paintings are by C.d'Arpino.
The upper part consists of an octagonal dome surmounted by a lantern. The interior is on an octagonal plan with four chapels by the sides. Particularly significance embodies the sculptural decorations among which one can mention two“angels” by Stefano Maderno and “Santa Susanna” by François Duquesnoy(1630-33).
