"Church/ Chiesa di Santa Maria d'Itria od Odigitria, Rome" submitted by RomeTour Editorial Team and last updated on Friday 29th April 2011
Santa Maria d'Itria od Odigitria was also named "Chiesa di Costantinopoli" in honor of an Image of Madonna with Child brought from Constantinopolis in the epoch of iconoclast. S.Maria d'Itria is a "national" church of Sicilians, as it was born as a hospice for pilgrims from Sicily in 1584.
Its building dates back to 1594, when ClementeVIII allowed the Sicilian community that resided in Rome to build a church anda boarding school for the youngsters that would come to study. The name SantaMaria Odigitria derives from the fact that a painting of the Vergine Odigitria, coming from Costantinople, was once inside the church
In its construction participated the king of Spain, Philip II. The church was destroyed by the French in reprisal of the fact that Ferdinand IV Bourbon during occupation of Rome in 1798 ordered the singing of "Te Deum" of thanksgiving here. The present aspect was given the church in 1814 during the reconstruction. In the lower one there is a portal surmounted by adedicatory inscription; in the upper one we find an arched window. The interior, which was restored in 1970,embodies a unique nave with an apse.
