Inside the Church /Chiesa di Santa Maria Maddalena in Campo Marzio, Rome

St Camillo de'Lellis, a soldier, who for many years assisted the sick people in the Roman Hospital S.Giacomo degli Incurabili and founded a Congregation "Ministri degli Infermi", obtained from the Confraternity of Gonfalone in 1585 a 15th century oratory. Here he worked till his death giving medical and social assistance to those who were in need. In the middle of the 17th century Ministri degli Infermi began the reconstruction of the oratory into a church and creation of a convent. C.Fontana, G.A.De Rossi and Giulio Carlo Quadri participated in work.

The facade is by G.Sardi (1735).

Interior of the church is divided into a an elliptical hall with two chapels on each side, a rectangular cross surmounted by a little dome, and an apse with two little chapels on the sides.

The marble and stucco decorations were finished only in the end of the 18th century. Should be specially noticed a wooden Crucifix (16th century), which would have spoken with S.Camillo, a 15th century wooden statue of Magdalene, and an organ constructed by a famous organ-maker Werle. The vault is frescoed by Michelangelo Cerruti (1732) and the dome by Stefano Parrocel (1739). The confessionals are by Giuseppe Palma (1762). A chapel on the right has a marble altar with a vault frescoed by S.Conca. In the 2nd chapel on the left is "St Laurence Giustiniani in Adoration of the Child" by L.Giordano (1704). The elaborate cantoria and organ date from the early 18th century.

Its richly decorated interior is much more compact than Rome's many grand Baroque churches, yet is as impressive, particularly the massive organ. It is located at a small piazza not too distant from the Pantheon.

The ash of S.Camillo de'Lellis is preserved in an urn inside of a church, and his heart is in reliquiarium in the convent.
