Church/ Chiesa di Santa Maria in Monterone, Rome

The name of the church derives from the Palazzo Sinibaldi, located in front of it, which originally belonged to the Sienese Monteroni family. The latter had a hospice adjoining the church built, which would give help to the people from Siena. The church itself was built before 1186 and was modified many times. In 1597 it was risen to avoid the periodical floods of Tiber. Interior has a nave and two aisles divided by eight ancient columns brought here from the Theatre if Pompeus formerly located here.

The radical reconstruction of the church took place in 1682; the high altar is of 1817; the Chapel of St Alfons was built in 1848, by P.Camporese the Younger. In 1728 on the right of the church a convent with a pleasant facade was erected. The interior, subdivided into three naves delimited by eight antique Ionian columns,is covered by a barrel vault. On the high altar one can admire the eighteenth-century-“Madonna tra San Pietro Nolasco e San Pietro Pascasio” probably painted by Pompeo Batoni.
