"Church/ Chiesa di Santa Susanna - American Catholic Church in Rome" submitted by RomeTour Editorial Team and last updated on Friday 29th April 2011
It was founded by pope St Caius in the 3rd century on the site of a house of St Susan, where she was martyred. St Leo III reconstructed it in 795, reducing its basilican plan to only one nave. The apse was decorated by mosaic. In 1475 the restoration works took place; and cardinal Girolamo Rusticucci brought the definite changes with the help of C.Maderno. The facade was finished in 1603; the statues in the lower niches of it are by Valsoldo, of the higher niches - by C.Maderno.
Interior was completed in 1595 and sumptuously decorated with the illusory effects amplifying the space. There is also a beautiful wooden ceiling, the nave paintings by Matteo Zoccolino da Cesena, paintings by C.Nebbia, and big tapestries on the walls by Baldassare Croce with the scenes from the life of St Susan. Four big pilasters on the sides support the statues of prophets by Valsoldo. A big part of interior is decorated with the stucco relieves by Valsoldo as well.
The church represents a firm example in the development of Baroque architecture and is one of the first of the kind. It has two orders: the first one includes the portal and two niches with a tympanum with statues by Valsodo and richly framed tables; the second one, with pilaster strips, joins the lower order via elegant volutes and holds a great balcony and two other niches with statues by Stefano Maderno. The richly decorated interior, with a single nave, contains four enormous frescoes by Baldassarre Croce that represent "Scene della vita di Santa Susanna martire romana e della Susanna biblica".
The transept is in form of two chapels built in the ancient aisles of primitive church. The left chapel is dedicated to S.Lorenzo and was erected in 1585 by Camilla Peretti, sister of Sixtus V. It is richly decorated with fine stuccoes and has an elegant altar with two beautiful columns and a painting by C.Nebbia.
Santa Susanna's Church is a beautiful and historic place of worship, whose every feature is steeped in the history, art, and architecture of the Christian faith as it has been lived over the centuries in Rome. At present Chiesa di S.Susanna is the American National parish Catholic Church in Rome.
