This church and convent in Via Merulana were erected on the territory of previous Villa Caserta. The church was built for Fathers-redeemers in 1855-1859 according to a project of English architect George Wigley. It is one of the neo-Gothic churches built in Rome in the end of the past century by catholic and protestant initiative (after 1870, when the non-Catholic confessions obtained the possibility to have their places of cult inside of Rome).
Chiesa di S.Alfonso, rome

Church/ Chiesa di Sant'Alfonso all'Esquilino is the first public example of "gothic-revival" in the Roman religious architecture. The façade, made of bricks and travertine, is characterized by the ogival that includes the rose-window. It is preceded by a protyrus with three halls, added up in the last restoration. One here venerates the devout image of Maria Santissima known as the "La Madonna del Perpetuo Soccorso", once belonging to the antique church of San Matteo in Merulana.
