Church/ Chiesa di Sant'Andrea delle Fratte, Rome

It was built in 1612 on the site of older church (12th century), which in the 15th century became a national church of Scots. In 1585 it was given to the monks from the monastery of Minims of St Francis of Paola at nearby Trinita' dei Monti. The marquise Paolo Del Bufalo financed the construction conducted by Gaspare Guerra in 1604-1612 (general plan and facade).

After a long pause F.Borromini continued work in 1653 until his death (apse, dome and bell-tower). The church's construction was finished by M.De Rossi in 1691. The vault was frescoed by F.Cozza in 1653-1660. The cupola and apse were depicted in 1700 by Pasquale Marini, and the three huge paintings depicting the crucifixion, death and burial of St Andrew are by G.B.Lenardi, L.Baldi and F.Trevisani. In the right transept is a Chapel of St Anna with a high altar executed by L.Vanvitelli and later re-elaborated by G.Valadier. The altar in the left transept is by Filippo Barigioni. By the high altar are two statues of angels by G.L.Bernini executed for the Ponte S.Angelo, and never placed there by wish of Clement IX; on the bridge they were substituted by the copies. The angels were presented to the church by nephew of the artist, Prospero, who lived in a family palace close to it.
