Church /Chiesa di S.Maria in Campo Marzio (Santa Maria In Campo Marzio) , Rome

The church was probably built in the 7th century, but was completely reconstructed in present form on a Greek-cross plan in 1685 by G.A.De Rossi. It has a little courtyard-cloister created at the same time with a little 1577 fountain in the middle, and a good portico. Inside, over the high altar is a Madonna, part of a triptych probably of the 12th-13th century. Since 1920 the church has belonged to the Roman Catholic Patriarchate of Antioch of the Syrians.

For centuries the church made part of a big closed prestigious female monastery, which was founded here in the 8th century by pope St Zaccharia by request of his compatriots, nuns from Constantinopolis, who run away from there and brought with them a body of St Gregory Nazianzeno. Later, the monastery was assigned to the Benedictine's order and became quite a powerful organization due to the support of noble rich families, some of who's members were nuns in the monastery. After it was reconstructed in 1564, the body of St Gregory was transferred in Vatican in 1580.

Built by the hand of Giacomo della Porta, Carlo Maderno and Francesco Paparelli, in 1668-1685 it was turned conformingly with the taste of the time by Giovanni Antonio De Rossi, author of the architectural decoration of the atrium and the facing courtyard, made wider via an illusion. It has a square plan with a Greek cross and an elliptical tambour-less dome. The peculiarity of the church consists of the numerous chapels, all richly decorated. On top of the altar there is the painting of a Madonna dated C.XII, where the church gets its name.
