"Church/ Chiesa Parrocchia Santa Maria in Via - Madonna del Pozzo, Rome" submitted by RomeTour Editorial Team and last updated on Friday 29th April 2011
The church was first mentioned in the documents in 995. In 1256 cardinal Pietro Capocci had it reconstructed and enlarged with the aim to include in it a well where the miraculous image of Madonna was found. The present look of the church was given it during reconstruction of 1594 under direction of G.Della Porta, M.Longhi and C.Rainaldi.
Church/ Chiesa Parrocchia Santa Maria in Via is renowned for the Pozzo Chapel, which was raised during C. XIII so asto welcome the portrait of the Madonna that was retrieved in 1256. It was firstrebuilt in 1491 and then again in 1594 by Francesco da Volterra. In 1670Carlo Rainaldi completed the facade. The denomination “In Via” derives to itsvicinity to via Lata (today via del Corso), known as “La Via”. The facade embodies two orders. The first oneopens up in the middle with the entry portal sided by two windows. The facade was created in 1590-1670 by C.Rainaldi.
Interior is simple and has a rectangular hall with four chapels on each side. The first chapel on the right is dedicated to Madonna del Pozzo, where the famous image of Madonna is held and venerated: it is a 13th century painting of Roman school. The 3rd chapel on the right was founded by the Aldobrandini and has some paintings of Cavalier d'Arpino. The 1st chapel on the left is dedicated to St Andrew in memory of another chapel "St Andrew ad columnam", which formerly was at Piazza Colonna, destroyed in the 16th century, and from where the different marble material and burial tablets passed to S.Maria in Via. Here is also a big expressive wooden Crucifix. The painting decorations of nave have no any particular importance; the apse is decorated with marbles. The church is served by Servite Order since Pope Leo X grant in 1513.
