The pope Leo X Medici concentrated his interest in the initial part of the street, where were particularly developed the residences of his fellow-countrymen Florentines. The colony, which started its existence here from the 15th century, grew in number and power in the epoch of two popes Medici. Leo X favoured to the project of construction of the national church dedicated to the patron of Florence, S.Giovanni Battista (St John Baptist). He ordered a competition for its erection. Raphael and Peruzzi were among the contestants; but J.Sansovino was successful and began the work in 1519. It was continued by A.da Sangallo the Younger and completed by G.della Porta in the end of 16th century; C.Maderno added the transept and cupola in 1620.
The facade is by A.Galilei and was erected only in 1734 and restored in 1992. Interior is on the Latin-cross plan, with 3 naves and side chapels. Decorations were executed by P.Bernini, G.L.Bernini, L.Cigoli, Passignano, S.Rosa, G.B.Vanni, Borromini, D.Guidi, E.Ferrata, A.Raggi. In this church were buried Maderno and Borromini. Among the artworks in the ten side chapels, are worth seeing some funeral monuments made by the most important sculptors of Baroque: Bernini, Algardi and Borromini, the latter buried in this church along with his nephew Carlo Maderno.
