"Church of San Tommaso ai Cenci" submitted by RomeTour Editorial Team and last updated on Sunday 26th June 2011
This church was built by the wish of the Cenci family, which could trace its origins back to the 14th century. This was the time when they started a very intensive purchasing of the territory and constructions on it in this zone, finishing with the creation of real stronghold supplied with the towers, living space and common services, in the center of which was the church of San Tommaso. Its first consecration took place in 1114 and the first restoration works were conducted by the other of three bishops one of which was the future pope Alexander IV. Notwithstanding the fact that the church stood on the Cenci's territory they obtained the patronage over it only in 1554. The decoration of S.Tommaso was finished in 1575.
The façade includes two portals surmounted by triangular tympani and with the dedicatory inscription. On top of it, in correspondence with the latter ones, one finds two round oculi and two small windows. In the middle there is a decorated frame that once embodied a fresco by now disappeared. The interior embodies a unique nave with a cross vault and the coat of arms of the Cenci family in the middle. The high altar consists of two trapezoid from C.I and underneath a tub in which, according to customs, unlucky Beatrice Cenci was supposedly baptized. On the walls one finds frescoes by G. Siciolante da Sermoneta (1565) representing “Storie della Vergine”.
