Church of Santa Catherine of Alexandria (S. Caterina della Rota)

The primitive little church, documented since 1186, had the name of S.Maria in Catenariis, because was annexed to the hospital for the people redeemed from the Saracen prisons. With the centuries the name of the church was popularly transformed in the name of Caterina, and it was attributed to the cult of S.Caterina di Alessandria, who's symbol was a wheel (ruota or rota) on which she was martyred. The church was restored in the 16th and 18th centuries; it contains the tomb of Giuseppe Vasi, one of the best engravers and illustrators of Rome.

At present the Church of Santa Catherine of Alexandria (S. Caterina della Rota) is occupied by Confraternita dei Palafrenieri, transferred here from its original seat in the Chiesa di S.Anna dei Palafrenieri, when in 1929 it became a parish church of the Vatican City.

The facade has only one part embodies a single order only (GRAVE!) and completion is crowned by a triangular gable. The interior has a single nave with three niches on each side.
