This church in Romanesque-Byzantine style was built in 1909 at the foot of the Palatine and in the middle of the Forum, it is of imposing dimensions and of beautiful architectonic execution. It replaced a medieval church which in turn incorporated parts of S. Maria Antiqua, a very old church.

In 1901-2 S Maria Liberatrice was pulled down during excavations works within the forum, and anew church of the same name built in Testaccio. This part of Rome was being developed into a modern sector with cheap housing, and the church was built in the main square. The image on the altar of old Santa Maria Liberatrice was moved to the new church. The excavations unearthed the podium of Tempio di Castore e Polluce.
