Construction of this Roman Catholic titulus church was began in 1518 by A.da Sangallo the Younger for the Confraternity of S.Maria di Monserrato (the famous Spanish sanctuary), founded by pope Alexander VI in 1495. The church was erected on the site of two previous hospitals and was a national church of Aragonians and Catalanians, till it became the church of all the Spanish united under the crown of Castiglia and Aragon, when the Chiesa di S.Giacomo in Piazza Navona was abandoned.

The Spanish National Church of Santiago and Montserrat or Church of Holy Mary in Monserrat of the Spaniards (Chiesa di Santa Maria in Monserrato degli Spagnoli) is National Church in Rome of Spain, dedicated to the Virgin of Montserrat.

From the latter numerous valuable monuments like statue of S.Giacomo, by Sansovino, funeral monuments attributed to A.Bregno and marble pavement, were transferred in the church of S.Maria di Monserrato. Here also is found the monument to two popes Callixtus III and Alexander VI, both Spanish, both Borgia, that were transferred here from the Vatican grottoes in 1881. The church also preserves the tomb of the King of Spain Alfonso XIII.

In the adjoining cloister built by G.Camporese in 1821, in occasion of restoration works, were arranged the 15th century tombs coming again from the church on Piazza Navona. In the annexed hall is located a monument to Pedro de Foix Montoya with his portrait, by the young G.L.Bernini.

The lower part of the facade was realized in the middle of the 16th century by F.da Volterra. The higher its part was remade in 1929 in course of the restoration works.

The Chapel of St James by San Gallo the Young, is decorated with Pellegrino da Modena’s frescoes and with a statue of St James, plaster copy of the original work by Jacopo Sansovino, which is currently housed in the church of Santa Maria in Monserrato.
