Sant'Anselmo, Benedictine University and College

In 1890 the Benedictine Order decided to build a church on the Aventine hill, next toan international college dedicated to Sant'Anselmo, the ologian and doctor of the Church. This big church was erected in 1892-1896 according to the project of a Belgian abbot De Hemptine and Francesco Vespignani. It has a basilica plan with three naves divided by big light granite columns.

The apses are decorated in mosaics. During the liturgical celebrations the priests-Benedictines of the church offer splendid execution of Gregorian singings. Collegio Internazionale Benedettino (International Benedictine College) is annexed to the church. It includes a rich library, and was erected by Benedictine Order replying to the impulse given by pope Leo XIII for the revival of the Catholic studies.

The church was consecrated in 1900. The entrance is preceded by a four sided portico. The interior has three naves separated by two lines of granite ionic columns. The crypt, today destined to be the library, has five naves and twenty red marble columns. It occupies the entire lower area of the church.

Nowadays the church is mainly known to the local Roman people because of the performance of Gregorian singers during the Sunday mass. Next to the church there are the Pontificio Ateneo Sant Anselmo and the Pontificio Istituto Liturgico.
