Church/Chiesa della Madonna del Divino Amore, Rome

According to a medieval tradition MADONNA DEL DIVINO AMORE church was built on the site of the parents' house of St Cecilia. Originally it was named Chiesa di S.Cecilia di Puzerato and Chiesa di S.Cecilia di Campomarzio. In 1575 it was renamed into Chiesa di S.Biagio dei Materassai, because it passed to the Confraternity of the corporation of mattress-makers. In 1729 the church was reconstructed according to a project of F.Raguzzini, the 12th century bell-tower was not touched. The present name of the church was given it by the Confraternity of Madonna of the Divine Love, to which the church was assigned in 1801.

The history of the Santuario Santa Maria del Divino Amore (Sanctuary of our Lady of Divine Love) dates back to the XIII century when in this area of the Roman Campagna there stood a kind of fortress belonging to the Savelli-Orsini family. This fortress was called Castel di Leva (Leva Castle). On one of the towers of the castle there was a votive image of the Virgin Mary, portrayed as sitting on a Throne and holding the child Jesus in her arms. A dove descends upon her as a symbol of the Holy Spirit, who is indeed the Divine Love. The image, which was frescoed in those same times, was much venerated by the local shepherds.

In 1944 theentire people of Rome begged the Vergine del Divino Amore to save the city fromthe horrors of the war and promised the building of a new sanctuary whoseconstruction was started in 1991. Theeighteenth-century-sanctuary-church, probably a work by Filippo Raguzzini, embodiesa facade with an arched tympanum amidst two windows. On top of the crowningtriangular tympanum one finds the statue of the Vergine Maria. Theinterior, embodying a single nave, appears simple and decorated with frescoesand paintings from C. XIX. In 1947 the crypt of the Addolorata was carried outin the old castle’s cistern, where one can see an artistic reproduction of thefirst miracle by the Madonna del Divino Amore and of the Voto di Maria.
