"Church/Chiesa della Trinita' dei Monti, Rome" submitted by RomeTour Editorial Team and last updated on Friday 29th April 2011
The church was begun in 1493 by Louis XII and was finished many centuries later, partly due to a damage brought in 1527 by sack of Rome. Many French personalities had sponsored construction of this French church on the territory of Rome, as well as its convent and cloisters. The name of the architect who created the facade (1570) is not known with the certainty: or C.Maderno or G.Della Porta. Interior has only one nave, which is divided by a grille into two parts. There is a number of chapels decorated by the most famous artists of the epoch: C.Nebbia, D.da Volterra, G.Romano, P.del Vaga, F.Zuccari and T.Zuccari. The convent was decorated by A.Pozzo and a cloister by the artists-mannerists who represented "Stories of St Francis of Paola".
The church was consecrated by Sixtus V in 1587, who also ordered a new double stairs of entrance built by D.Fontana (1587).
After harm and abandon of Nepoleon's occupation, the church was restored in 1828 at the expense of Louis XVIII and entrusted to the congregation of Minims, who continue their activity here till our days.
