Church/Chiesa di San Girolamo dei Croati (degli Schiavoni), Rome

Starting from the 15th century in Borghi district a colony of refugies from Illiric-Croatian lands was settled. They left their country running away from Turks. Their congregation obtained a Chiesetta di S.Marina in 1453 close to the port of Ripetta. The church was given a new name of St Jerome and a hospice adjoining it was built. Sixtus V was a protector of the colony and ordered M.Longhi construction of the new church. The hospice was destroyed in 1934-1940 and substituted by Croatian College. The facade is in late-Renaissance style with a bell-tower built by M.Longhi as well.

There is a fountains between this church and Chiesa di S.Rocco, it is name is Fontana della Botticella (1774). It reminds about an ancient discharge of wine in the Port of Ripetta located in this zone and destroyed now.

Today the church is property of the Croatian government. The facade, made by Martino Longhi, has a late Renaissance style. It is made of travertine and it is divided into two orders. The lower order has a portal with four lateral niches. The upper order has a large window with a triangular gable on top. The interior has a Latin cross plan with three chapels on each side and a fake dome painted by Andrea Lilio (1555-1610). This church is also called Chiesa di S.Girolamo degli Illirici.
