Church/Chiesa di S.Rocco (San Rocco all'Augusteo), Rome

The church belongs to the Confraternity of Innkeepers and Boatmen of Ripetta, which built it in 1499. It was dedicated to a French saint St Rocco, who lived in the 14th century in Rome and helped people dying from the Black Death. The building was reconstructed in 1657 by G.A.De Rossi and restored in neo-classic style by G.Valadier in 1834. The facade is dominated by four very big Corinthian columns. On the door is the coat-of-arms of Gregory XIV. The interior is elegant especially due to the beautiful arches connecting the side chapels. San Rocco church is located at 1 Largo San Rocco, Rome, dedicated to Saint Roch. It is next to the Mausoleum of Augustus.

The hospital of Confraternity was annexed to the church, but in 1616 Antonio Maria Salviati transformed it in the Hospital for Women in labour, married and single, who needed medical assistance and privacy. In the 18th century the hospital and houses around it were demolished and Palazzo Valdambrini was built. It was famous for its meetings of men of letters and for Classic Music concerts. It was also destroyed in course of works over the Mausoleum of Augustus.

The interior has a single nave and includes three intercommunicating chapels on each side. Above the portal one finds a nice choir made of carved and golden wood, dated C.XVIII. Inside the church a nativity by Baldassarre Peruzzi, besides the marvellous frescoes byCesare Mariani and Giacomo Brandi.
