Church/Chiesa San Lorenzo in Lucina, Rome

It was built in the 4th-5th centuries on the site of the house of matron Lucina. In the beginning of the 12th century the church was reconstructed by order of Pascal II. The portico with six Ionic columns and a bell-tower of present church remained in the 12th century form.

The interior was rearranged in 1650 by C.Fanzago. It has one nave and four chapels on each side. In 1857 the modest painting decoration was executed by Roberto Bompiani. The simple pavement is of 1734. The 4th chapel on the right was created by G.L.Bernini for the family of the doctor of pope Innocent X, Gabriele Fonseca. The 2nd chapel on the left was covered by the polychrome marbles in 1940. The 3rd chapel on the left belongs to the Ruspoli family and was decorated with a series of paintings by M.Benefial. The high altar was designed by C.Rainaldi, and has an exceptional painting by G.Reni representing "Crucifixion". Behind the altar is a throne made of ancient marbles. Inside of the church are also the funeral monument of Nicolas Poussin (erected by the wish of Chateaubriand in 1830), of Luca Marenzio (a musician), and of Bernardo Pasquini (one of the best organ players).

Another chapel not to be missed out is the "Fonseca" by Bernini, also known as "Cupoletta con Angeli suonatori".On the high altar, by Carlo Rainaldi. (1675) one finds the "Crocifissione" by Guido Reni.
