Comune d'Ischia (The Municipality of Ischia)

The Commune of Ischia (The Municipality of Ischia) at Island of Ischia In Campania region (Naples Province) occupies the territory of approx. 9sq.m and has 16.013 inhabitants. The average altitude is 70m. The territory is devided in 2 main zones: Ischia Porto, called in ancient times as Villa dei Bagni (Villa of the Baths), because of the presence of numerous thermal water pools; and Ischia Ponte, the ancient "Borgo di Mare" or "Borgo di Celsa". The name of Ischia was extinguished to the whole Commune in the recent times, because before the "City of Ischia" consisted only of so called "Castello aragonese" (Aragon Castle), where had the seat the governer of the island and the bishop of the dioceses.

The precence of the man on the territory of the Commune of Ischia is very ancient, but it was developed intensively between 2nd century b.C and the 2nd century a.C., with the city of "AEnaria" which later gave the name to the whole island. It was the iron center of a great importance. It disappeared under the water in the end of the 2nd century a.C.. The higher part of the city of AEnaria cituated on the contemporary hill called Cartaromana, continued its life even during the Middle Ages. In the Modern Times together with the abandoning of the Castello Aragonese, which was populated after the erruption of the volcano Fiaiano in 1301, increased more and more Villa dei Bagni located on the side of the lake. This lake was transformed in the port by the king Ferdinand II, who connected it with the sea. The lake was formed naturally in the crater of the volcano. The centers of interest in the Commune of Ischia are Porto d'Ischia, Corso Vittoria Colonna, Sant'Antonio, Ischia Ponte, Il Castello, Cartaromana, Campagnano and S.Ciro.
