Antico Caffé Greco, Via dei Condotti, Rome

It follows the tract of previous Via Trinitatis laid out by Paul III in the 2nd half of the 16th century. It was longer than Via Condotti because reached Tiber. The name "condotti" derives from the conduits (=condotti) of an aqueduct Acqua Vergine, which Gregory XIII made a passage under this street.

In the 18th-19th centuries Via dei Condotti was an international center of Rome, with famous hotels, inns, restaurants and coffee-houses, visited by celebrated artists and writers of that epoch. Turning left down Via del Gambero from Via Condotti you can reach Piazza San Silvestro and Via del Corso.

Caffe Greco, founded in 1760 at #86, survived till our days; its clients were Stendhal, Goethe, Schopenhauer, Gogol, Berlioz, Wagner, M.Twain and etc; it is decorated with the things and autographs belonged to these personalities. In the house #81 sojourned in 1831-1832 celebrated Italian poet Giacomo Leopardi, one of rare cases when a person didn't like Rome.

At present Via Condotti is the most elegant street of Rome with the shops of the most important fashion houses, golden and silver shops, galleries of art, free from traffic and always crowded with people. Its twin is London's Bond Street.
