Giovanni Fontana, Italian architect and engineer, was born in Melide, Lugano in 1540 and died in Rome in 1614. He was a brother of Domenico Fontana and was his helper in Rome; later was working together with C.Maderno. Being an excellent hydraulic engineer, he arranged in different locations the courses of rivers around Rome and conducted construction of an aqueduct of Paul V. He was also one of the architects of St Peter's in Rome.
