Island of Ischia In Campania (Naples), Italy

The roughly trapezoidal Island of Ischia lies at Naples Province of Campania region in Southern Italy. Island of Ischia is about 30 km from Naples and measures around 10 km east to west and 7 km north to south with a 34 kilometres (21 mi) coastline and a surface area of 46.3 square kilometres (17.9 sq mi). It is almost entirely mountainous, with the highest peak being Mount Epomeo at 788 meters. The island has a population of over 60,000 people. The ancient Greek people "Euboeas"called it PITHECUSAE.

It is the largest of the three islands off the coast of Naples, (Procida, Capri and Ischia), and more than holds its own in this trinity of beauty rising from the azure waters of the Tyrrhenian Sea. This haven seems a million miles away from the haranguing, energy charged streets of Naples, (in reality only a short ferry journey away) and holds pleasures for the most intrepid or timid of travellers.

Six are the communes of the island: Ischia, Casamicciola Terme, Lacco Ameno, Forio, Serrara Fontana and Barano, with about 50.000 inhabitants. Ischia is the most important. Into the harbour area is the trading part of the town and another important area is that one around the "Castello Aragonese" which is called "Ischia Ponte", a picturesque ancient fisher's village. The evocative Ischia's harbour was originally the crater of a volcanonow extinct and sunk which originated a lake. The main attractions are: the Aragonese Castle, the Sea Museum, the Madonna delle Grazie e delle Anime del Purgatorio also known as S Pietro Church, the Cattedrale dell’Assunta, the parish church S Maria di Portosalvo, the church of the Addolorata, the Antoniana Library, the Seminar Palace and the Collegiata dello Spirito Santo church.

Ischia Porto is the name of the main comune of the island. Other community areas include Barano d'Ischia, Casamicciola Terme, Forio, Lacco Ameno and Serrara Fontana. Ischia is easily reached by using the frequent and dependable ferry service from Naples, and from here it's quite easy to travel by ferry to the Isle of Capri and the Amalfi Coast. Ischia is one of the most famous seaside and touristic spa centres of Italy and the world.
