Lacco Ameno, Ischia

The Commune of Lacco Ameno at Island of Ischia In Campania region (Naples Province) occupies the territory of 2,07sq km with the altitude of 300m over the sea level and the population of 4.079. The name derives from the "laccos", i.e.basin, tub. In 1862 to "Lacco" was adjoined "Ameno" by the request of the cummune council. The archeological excavations showed that on this part of the island in the middle of the 8th century b.C., Greeks from Clacide and Eretria, important centers of the island Eubea, founded the city named Pithekoussai. They gave the life to the prosperous vase industry, using the clay deposits of the land. The works from iron, imported from the island Elba, got their fame thanks to the skills of Pithekoussai's artisans. The other archeological discovery proved existance of a roman village situated on the place of contemporary church of S.Restituta, from the 1st century b.C. The important centers of Lacco-Ameno are Piazza S.Restituta, Corsi A.Rizzoli, Piazza Rosario, Fundera and Fango.
