Quatremere De Quincy (Paris 1755-1849) (Antoine Chrysostome), French politician and art critic. Deputy (1791), imprisoned un the Terror, a member of Five Hundred, and a deputy again in 1820-1822. He was an archeologist and superintendent of art and public monuments (1816); editor of the Dictionary of Architecture (1795-1825) for Methodical Encyclopaedia by Charles Joseph Panckoucke; author of Ideas about the ideal (1805), Jupiter of Olimpus (1814), Canova (1834), Michelangelo (1839).
Ramses II (died in 1225 b.C.) king of ancient Egypt in 1292-1225. His reign was marked by war with the Hittites and the construction of many colossal monuments, esp. the rock temple at Abu Simbel.
Riario, Girolamo (Savona 1443-Forli' 1488) Lord of Imola and Folri'. The greater part of his success is due to his uncle, the pope Sixtus IV, who favoured his marriage with Caterina Sforza in 1473 from who received as a dowry Imola.
Riario, Pietro (1445-1474) a son of Paolo and Bianca Della Rovere, nephew of Sixtus IV, who nominated him in 1471 a bishop of Treviso and cardinal, arch-bishop of Florence in 1473. He was known for liberality and patronage of arts.
Riario, Raffaele (1451-Rome 1521) A son of Violante Riario and Antonio Sansoni, preferred to take more noble surname of his mother. Became a cardinal in 1477 with the favour of his relative Sixtus IV, more receved from the latter numerous disceses (Cuneo, Pisa, Salamanca, Treguier and Osma). He was compromised in the conspiracy dei Pazzi (1478) and the one organized by cardinal Alfonso Petrucci against Leo X (1517), for which had to pass through the proccess in court. He died being a bishop of Ostia.
Ricci, Giovanni (Montepulciano 1497-Rome 1574) in the beginning of his ecclesiastic carrier he was at the service of cardinal Gian Maria Ciocchi del Monte (the future pope Julius III), later worked as the pope's ambassador in Portugal and bishop of Siponto in 1544; in 1551 he was elected cardinal by the same pope.
Ritz, Cesar (Niederwald 1850-Kussnacht, Schwyz, 1918) Swiss hotel industrialist. After being a director of numerous great hotels, he founded in 1898 the Ritz Hotel in Paris, which was followed by the Ritz Hotels in London (1905), New York (1907) and Budapest (1918).
Romulus Roman myth. The founder of Rome, suckled with his twin brother Remus by a she-wolf after they were abandoned in infancy. Their parents were Rhea Silvia and Mars. Romulus later killed Remus in an argument over the new city.
Rossi, Pellegrino (Carrara 1787-Rome 1848) Italian economist, lawer and politician. He studied law in the universities of Pisa and Bologna, where received a Diploma in 1806. He became a proffesor in 1813 working in specialized educational institutions of Bologna teaching law and penalty process...
