Monumento a G.G.Belli (Monument to G. G. Belli)

Monumento a G.G.Belli (Monument to G. G. Belli), Piazza Giuseppe Gioachino Belli, Trastevere
The monument to a Roman poet G.G.Belli was erected in 1913 by a sculptor Michele Tripisciano. It shows the poet leaned on the herm of the Ponte Fabricio on the background of typical symbols of the popular life of Romans to which Belli dedicated his life and left a collection of 2279 sonnets as a realistic document. The poet has a stick in the hand which was originally made of wood, after it was stolen as a souvenir, substituted and stolen again, it was finally made of iron depicted in black. It was noticed that Trastevere was probably the only district of Rome where Belli didn't have a house (he had a lot of them in other parts of the city), nor the motives for work. Nevertheless, right for its popular traditions Trastevere was chosen as a place where the memory of Roman poet should be conserved.

Piazza Giuseppe Gioacchino Belli

Piazza Belli owes its name to Giuseppe Gioacchino Belli (1791- 1863), a Roman poet who wrote in Roman dialect and left with its sonnets a vivid picture of Rome of the first half of the 19th century. The monument is for him and he seems to look pensive the intensive traffic, not recognizing his old Rome of the 19th century anymore. On the back, almost unreal, restored to its medieval architecture, the Palazzo Anguillara, overlooked by the gloomy tower, evokes old intrigues. At the centre of the square is the statue of poet Michele Tripisciano (1913).

Fountains of Belli Monument (Fontana Monumento a Belli)

Two small twin fountains decorate the base of the monument by the sculptor Michele Tripisciano built in 1913 with a public subscription to commemorate the greatest Roman dialect poet. A curiosity: the poet is represented leaning on a walking stick that originally consisted of a real wooden stick. It was stolen several times by “hunters of souvenirs” and always replaced with real wooden sticks. Today Belli’s stick is a normal iron rod painted black to imitate ebony.
