The museum was founded in 1930 to illustrate the history and life of Rome from the Middle Ages to the present day. It was first located in the building of ex-pasta factory in Piazza Bocca della Verita', and was transferred in Palazzo Braschi in 1952 when it was restored. Many of the works of art come from demolished buildings. The collection included detached frescoes by Cigoli and Spagna, portraits of prominent members of the Accademia dell'Arcadia, paintings by P.Batoni, Baciccia, A.Sacchi, P.da Cortona, G.Reni, G.P.Pannini, and G.Hamilton. It also has sculptures by F.Mochi, A.Canova and P.Tenerani, and mosaics from the old facade of St Peter's, prints, ceramics, silver goods, furniture and photographs.

The Museum of Rome possesses a wide variety of articles relating to the history of the city from the Middle Ages to the first half of the 20th century. The collections of the museum consist of 40,000 pieces that document the different moments of the life, work, and customs of the city of Rome from the Middle Ages up to our days. Museo di Roma (Museum of Rome) has collection of Frescoes and mosaics, Ceramics, Costumes and fabrics, Paintings the seventeenth and the eighteenth century, Paintings the nineteenth and twentieth century, Drawings, Photographs, Engravings, Old books, Furniture, Trains and carriages..etc.

Sculptures and paintings, many of which representing feasts, ceremonies, and various historical events are exhibited, in addition to sixteenth century and Medieval mosaics, frescoes, and ceramics, discovered during the excavations and demolitions that affected the city. It also includes the De Sanctis collection and the complete series of casts by Pietro Tenerani, a well-known sculpture of the past century.

Part of the project for the New Museum of Rome is the Computer Documentation Centre which is cataloguing all the collections belonging to the Museum for the purpose of setting up a databank that can be used at various levels of access, for the museum staff, the student, the tourist or the scholar. A selection of graphic works on the Roman Republic and the Rome of Pius IX are temporarily on display in the ground floor halls.

The collection of the museum comprises the Municipal Cabinet of Prints and the Photographic Archive, they are largerly digital and can be consulted via multimedia stations. When the Museum reopens, the public will be able to consult the computerised catalogue of all the works kept in Palazzo Braschi and printed catalogues will be available for some areas of the collections.

NOTE: Partial closure for maintenance work at the Museum of Rome from May 24 to June 13, 2011, the first hall of the second floor can't be visited, the remaining halls will be open instead. The floor will not be accessible by elevator. Also note that the documentation center is closed from April 28 until further notice due to maintenance work.
