The National Museum of Castel Sant'Angelo inside retraces its history. The castle has various exhibits ranging from Renaissance paintings and pottery to antique military weapons. A huge spiral ramp ascends upwards the Castel Sant Angelo for about 400 feet. This Fortress was built as a mausoleum for the Emperor Hadrian (AD130-139), but it has also been a prison and a papal residence. It was used by former Popes who absconded there for protection in times of danger. There has been a covered passageway which still connects Castel Sant'Angelo to the Vatican. Today, Castel Sant Angelo houses a museum which tells the story of its history, from the Roman remains of the Mausoleum of Hadrian to remnants of the fortified castle, the original prison cells and the papal apartments.

it is hard to beat an entire Sunday exploring Castel Sant Angelo - in addition to the castel itself, throughout the summer there is entertainment on many levels of the castle. You will find a cafe and gelato stand and music on the cannon deck. Every night throughout July and August, the terraces of the Castel Sant'Angelo come alive with music, cabaret, shows for the kids, a bar, a gelateria, and a restaurant "La Cucineria dei Masi," as well as the usual bancarelle selling all kinds of stuff. Here you will find this lovely outdoor playground for kids as well as lovely gardens, a great view of the Castel, the Passetto (Pope's getaway passage from the Vatican) and a great bronze statue of Hadrian rear-guarding his Castle from behind. Also there are audio guide, bookshop, Caffetteria.
