Palazzo della Rinascente (La Rinascente), Rome

It was the first modern commercial construction introduced in Rome. The palace of fashionable market of clothes was promoted by brothers Ferdinando and Luigi Bocconi, owners of the Great Stores in Milan, who wanted to follow the example of similar initiatives already existing in other Europian capitals such as London and Paris.

The Palazzo della Rinascente, formerly palazzo dei magazzini Bocconi "Alle città d'Italia", was erected by Giulio De Angelis on the site of destroyed block of houses, and opened in 1887 with the name Alle citta d'Italia. It obtained a great success due to the innovations never seen before in Rome: the form of representation of goods, electrical illumination and etc. The structure is entirely metallic, which allowed for the huge windows. Inside there are balconies with cast iron columns and an open central space. It was the first building in Rome to have moving stairways, besides being one of the first to have a lift. In 1918 the enterprise was transformed and the construction was demolished and reconstructed with the new name La Rinascente.
