Piazza Vittorio, as it is called more commonly, is a wide rectangular square completely surrounded by arcades in Piemontese style, unique in this type in Rome and with its dimensions of 316x147 side meters, is one of the biggest squares of the Capital. It is situated in Esquilino, an equally large area that stretches out to Piazza della Repubblica to the north, close the the Colosseum to the left and to San Giovanni to the south.

Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II, also known as Piazza Vittorio, is a piazza in Rome (today in the ex Caserma Pepe close by), in the Esquilino rione. It is served by the Vittorio Emanuele Metro station. The station was inaugurated in 1980 and is sited underground, beneath Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II, which gives it its name, in the Esquilino rione. In the middle of the square there is a big garden (recently restored) that exposes remains of the so called Marios' trophies: a ruin of a fountain from the Severian Age.

This square was dedicated to the King, who unified Italy, Victor Emmanuel II, it is now a daily food market of very populated district of the city, noted for its abundance of North African, Asian and Middle Eastern products and vendors. The square is surrounded by porticoes and planted with plane trees, cedars of Lebanon, and oleanders. Here, in the antic ruins and close to the market, the most numerous colony of cats in Rome is living.

The remains of the antique Villa of Prince Poniatowsky, noble of Polish origin and famous alchemist of '700, where the "Magic Door", gives more interest visiting the park. You can find alchemic symbols on the ancient pillars, and the legend says that there is a magic formula hidden about transforming simple metals into gold.

Around the park there are several stands to drink something and flower stands open 24h! Parts of the original Rome city wall have been preserved during the renovation of the park.

The playground and the park are frequented by people of all nationalities, because Piazza Vittorio and the surrounding area is the most multi -cultural district of Rome.

Near Santa Maria Maggiore, the largest open-air food market in Rome takes place Monday through Saturday at Piazza Vittorio Emanuele. This square, now filled with market stalls, is considered to be the first square in the new Italy. The market has been present since the Second World War, and has became the place to find everything from food to stolen goods. In the surroundings of Piazza Vittorio you find plenty of restaurants, some of them are the most important ones of Rome.

The Esquilino district and Piazza Vittorio Emanuele in Rome host the most expected cinema show by Roman public. Via Carlo Aberto leads northwest from Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II to Piazza Santa Maria Maggiore and the church of Santa Maria Maggiore. From the other end of the square one road leads towards Porta Maggiore o Presentia and the Basilica di Santa Croce in Gerusalemme The other leads south to San Giovanni in Laterano church.

In a corner of the square you can spot the Church of Sant'Eusebio dating back to the IV century and restored in 1230 under Pope Gregorius IX, it was rebuilt in 1711 by Stefano Fontana. The square is surrounded by porticoed buildings by Koch, Codesti and other architects.

In the center of the square are the rests of a fountain, known as the "Trofei di Mario" of the marble decorations, that in 1590 were transferred to the balustrade of piazza del Campidoglio. This was formerly the terminal of an aqueduct. of Acqua Giulia. The "Trophies" were monumental marble compositions that the war leaders were dedicating to the divinities of their temples, to commemorate their victories.

Piazza Vittorio is the biggest square in Rome: 316m x 174m. Visitors with young ones will appreciate the playground and play area found in the Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II. In the center of the garden are the remains of a fountain by Severus, and the Porta Magica, which is the entrance to Villa Palombara, once the home of the well-known 17th-century alchemist, Massimo Palombara da Pietraforte.
