In Rome shops mostly open from 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.. Every shop is free to follow non stop opening hours, as it happens generally in the historic centre. During the year shops are mostly closed on Monday mornings but for the year 2000 this closing is left optional. Food shops are open from 8:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. and from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. They close on Thursday afternoons. In August most shops close for holidays, but it is seen that a number of them will stay open to guarantee a sufficient coverage. On Sundays shops in the historic centre are allowed to stay open all year round. In case of necessity, however, you can buy in drugstores - open around the clock. Large stores and shopping malls open non stop from 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.
